Quick answer
Fascia Board Repair in Northeast Atlanta, GA: The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Northeast Atlanta pulls out rotted or split fascia and puts in new board, or covers sound wood with aluminum wrap, then puts the gutter back up on fresh hangers so it can hold a full load of storm water. We also install perforated vinyl soffit. Call (770) 637-5130 or book online.
What is a fascia board? Sometimes called soffit board, fascia is the board that runs horizontally along the roof edge and covers the ends of the rafters. Fascia can be wood, a wood substitute or metal, and with the soffit underneath it seals the attic off from the weather. It is also what holds your gutters up.
Some older homes in Marietta, Athens and Watkinsville were built with exposed rafter tails and no fascia at all, while plenty of brick ranches around Tucker have wood fascia that has spent years behind a leaking gutter. Either way, a gutter is only as strong as what it is fastened to.

Wrap it, replace it or hang without it: getting the board behind your gutter right
What we do at the roof edge depends on what we find once the gutter comes down. Here is how we decide, including for older Marietta and Athens homes built with no fascia at all.
Fascia rot hides. Most of the time you cannot tell how bad a board is until the gutter is off, because the damage starts on the back face, where water has been running between the gutter and the wood. If a gutter has been overflowing or dripping at a seam for a few seasons, the odds are high that the board behind it is soft.
That matters more here than in drier places. A gutter sized for a Georgia summer thunderstorm carries real weight when it fills, and every hanger is only as strong as the wood it bites into. Pine needles packed in the trough keep that wood damp between storms, too.
Screws driven into the face of a fascia board hold across the grain of the wood. On homes with open rafter tails and no fascia, hangers end up in the end grain of each rafter, which does not hold nearly as well. That is the main reason we push for solid fascia wherever the house allows it.
Wrap or replace: how we decide
| What we find | What we do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sound wood with weathered paint | Cover it with aluminum fascia wrap | Seals the board and ends the repaint cycle |
| Soft spots in one section | Cut out and replace that section, then wrap or paint | Hangers need solid wood along the full run |
| Rot along most of a wall | Replace the whole run of fascia before the gutter goes back up | Patching a board that is failing everywhere just moves the problem |
| No fascia, open rafter tails | Add fascia, build out the overhang, or hang on roof straps | Depends on the roof material and the look of the house |
| Missing or damaged soffit | Install perforated vinyl soffit | Closes the attic to pests while keeping air moving |
Older homes with no fascia
Some older homes around Marietta, Athens and Watkinsville were built with exposed rafter tails and deep overhangs, on the idea that the overhang would throw water clear of the house. It rarely does. Water still lands near the foundation and splashes back onto siding, windows and doors. We have three ways to fix that. We can add fascia to the rafter ends, or build the overhang out and add fascia to the extension. Where neither works, we hang the gutter on roof straps that attach to the hidden hanger inside the gutter and fasten to the roof. On an older roof the strap usually goes on top of the shingles, because lifting brittle shingles breaks them. Straps are strong, though not as strong as fascia and more visible from the street, and we do not recommend them on slate, tile or cedar shingle roofs.
Signs the fascia behind your gutter is failing
- The gutter is pulling away from the roofline or tipping forward.
- Hangers or old spikes are backing out of the board.
- Paint blistering on the fascia while the rest of the trim looks fine.
- Dark streaks on the board below a seam or corner.
- Wood that gives when you press it with a screwdriver.
- Gaps where squirrels, birds or insects can get into the soffit.
Why soffit matters in a Georgia summer
Soffit is the panel that runs from the bottom of the fascia back to the wall. Together they shield the rafters from weather, and vented soffit lets air move through the attic, which keeps attic temperatures more even and helps the house stay cooler through a long Georgia summer. If your soffit is damaged or missing, we install perforated vinyl soffit while the gutter is down. Then we fix whatever soaked the board in the first place: a leaking seam handled through gutter repair, an overflowing run replaced with seamless gutters, or wet leaves kept out with BroGuard gutter guards. It gives them something to hang on. Each hanger is screwed into the fascia, and a sound board carries the weight of a gutter full of water, which in a Georgia downpour adds up fast. When the board is solid, those hangers stay tight storm after storm.
Usually not without pulling the gutter off first. Water that has been slipping behind the gutter for months has very likely softened the board. Peeling paint, soft spots, dark streaks on the trim and a gutter that dips between hangers are other clues, and your Solutionist will look for each one at the free estimate.
If the wood is sound, an aluminum fascia wrap (it comes in multiple sizes) protects it and ends the repainting. If the board is soft or crumbling, wrapping only hides the problem, so we replace it first. Whichever route we take, fresh hangers go in when the gutter is rehung.
Yes. On homes with open rafter tails, a roof strap clips to the hidden hanger inside the gutter and fastens to the roof itself. On an older shingle roof the strap goes on top of the shingles, because lifting them can crack them. Straps hold well, though not as well as fascia mounting, and we steer away from them on slate, tile and cedar shake, where building out the overhang and adding fascia is the better route.
A gutter loaded with storm water and soggy oak leaves is heavy, and rotted wood cannot keep screws tight under that load. The hangers loosen, the run sags, and water pools in the low spot instead of flowing to the downspout. New fascia and new hangers fix the sag at its source.
Humid summers, hard storms and years of gutters that overflowed or leaked at the seams keep the wood wet. Homes from the 1960s through the 1980s around Lilburn, Norcross and Stone Mountain often still have their original boards under many coats of paint, and the paint can hide soft wood underneath.
Yes. If your soffit is damaged or missing, we install perforated vinyl soffit. The perforations let the attic breathe, which keeps attic temperatures more even through a muggy Georgia summer.
