Quick answer
Gutter Sizes in Northeast Atlanta, GA: The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Northeast Atlanta forms 5 inch, 6 inch and 7 inch seamless gutters on site. 5 inch suits most homes, 6 inch carries roughly 40 percent more water for large, steep or complex roofs, and 7 inch handles commercial buildings and very large roof areas. Call (770) 637-5130 or book online.
Gutters come in more than one size, and the right one depends on how much water your roof sends at once. A properly sized seamless gutter carries that water to the downspouts and away from the house before it can stain the siding or soak the clay around your foundation.

5, 6 or 7 inch: which size belongs on each part of your roof
Size is decided run by run, not house by house. Use this guide to see where your home probably lands, then let a Solutionist confirm it with a tape measure.
Most houses do not need one size everywhere. A two-story in Buford may be fine with 5 inch across the front and still need 6 inch on the porch roof that catches the upper roof’s water. A Johns Creek home with several valleys may need 6 inch along the back and nothing more than 5 inch on the garage.
What changes the answer is how much water reaches one stretch of gutter at the same moment. Roof area, pitch, valleys and upper roofs all feed that number, and our weather tests it hard. Summer thunderstorms dump fast, and tropical storm remnants in late summer and fall can keep the rain coming for hours.
So we size for the worst afternoon of the year, then spend the extra capacity only where the roof needs it.
The three sizes compared
| Size | Downspouts | Where it fits here | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 inch | 2×3, or 3×4 where more roof drains to one outlet | Single-story ranches, garages and simple roof sections | 5 inch gutters |
| 6 inch | 3×4 | Big two-story planes, steep pitches, valleys, lower roofs under upper roofs, metal roofs | 6 inch gutters |
| 7 inch | Oversized, and often more of them | Commercial buildings, barns and very large homes where clean 6 inch still spills | 7 inch gutters |
How common Northeast Atlanta homes usually size out
- 1960s to 1980s brick ranches in Tucker, Lilburn and Norcross: 5 inch on most runs, with a close look at where the downspouts empty.
- Two-story subdivision homes in Suwanee, Dacula and Cumming: 5 inch up top, 6 inch on lower runs that catch upper-roof water.
- Larger homes with complex rooflines in Johns Creek and Alpharetta: 6 inch wherever valleys pour into a corner.
- Lake homes around Lake Lanier with metal roofs: capacity checked closely, often 6 inch on the big planes.
- Shops, offices and warehouses from Lawrenceville to Gainesville: 6 or 7 inch, laid out by our commercial gutter team.
- Barns and outbuildings on larger lots toward Jefferson and Winder: sized by the roof area feeding each edge, not by what is on the house.
Before you upsize, rule these out
- Clear the outlets.A packed outlet makes any size of gutter overflow. If the spilling stops after a gutter cleaning, size was never the problem.
- Count the downspouts.A run over 40 feet with one outlet is a downspout problem first. A second outlet or a 3×4 downspout often fixes it without new gutters.
- Check the pitch.A run that has flattened or sagged holds water mid-span and spills early. Re-hanging it at the right slope restores the capacity it was built with.
- Look upstream. An upper gutter emptying onto a lower roof concentrates water on one short run. That run is the usual candidate for a bigger trough.
- Then size the trough. If the roof still sends more water than the gutter can carry, we step that section up and leave the rest alone.
- Finish at the ground.Bigger gutters move more water to each outlet. On sloped lots and red clay, underground drainage carries it off instead of letting it pool at the foundation.

Why the Brothers
Why Northeast Atlanta Homeowners Call the Brothers
We size for the hard afternoon rain this area gets, not for an average day. That is what keeps water off the fascia when it counts.
A Solutionist looks at your actual roof before suggesting a size. If 5 inch does the job, that is what goes on the estimate.
Our crews work out of Suwanee, Marietta, Ball Ground and Watkinsville, so a Solutionist is never far from your street.
The Brothers That Just Do Gutters was founded by brothers Ken and Ryan Parsons, and this location is locally owned and operated. The know-how is national and the crew is local.

For many homes here, 5 inch is enough, especially single-story brick ranches like the ones across Lilburn and Snellville. Larger two-story homes, steep pitches and complex rooflines with several valleys, which are common in Johns Creek and Alpharetta, often need 6 inch, which carries roughly 40 percent more water. 7 inch is for commercial buildings and very large roof areas. We measure before recommending anything.
Watch them in a hard rain. If water sheets over the front of a clean gutter along the whole run, it is probably undersized. A clog overflows at one spot, while an undersized gutter spills evenly. Lower roofs catching water from an upper gutter are a common trouble spot.
Roof area, roof pitch, the shape of the roofline and the local rainfall. A big, steep roof plane delivers more water faster than a small, low one. Using two sizes on one house is often the cost-effective answer when only some sections need more capacity.
As a rule of thumb, a run under 40 feet can work with one downspout and a run over 40 feet should have two. If a long run cannot get a second downspout, that is a reason to go to 6 inch. Adding downspouts in the right places often fixes overflow without changing the gutter.
We form 5, 6 and 7 inch seamless gutters on site. If your building needs something larger, ask your Solutionist about oversized options. We choose the size from your roof area, pitch and how the water collects, not from whatever the builder happened to put up.
Yes, because our rain comes in bursts. A summer thunderstorm can drop an inch or more in under an hour, and tropical storm remnants can keep it coming for a day or two. Gutters have to be sized for that peak, not for an average shower. A gutter that looks fine in a light rain can overflow in the first big afternoon storm.
