What hail and wind do to gutters

After a storm on your street, this is what our crews look for, and what you can spot from the ground:

  • Dents along the front lip. Hail hits the top edge of the gutter hardest. Dents there can bend the lip and change how water runs.
  • Crushed or kinked downspouts. A dented downspout or elbow narrows the path, so water backs up into the gutter in the next downpour.
  • Seams and end caps pulled open. They show up as drips or streaks in the next rain, usually at corners.
  • Hangers pulled loose. Wind and falling limbs leave a run sagging or tipped away from the fascia board.
  • Bent or lifted gutter guards. A guard knocked out of place lets leaves and twigs straight into the trough.
  • Debris packed into the outlets. Storms strip leaves, twigs and shingle grit off the roof and pack them where the gutter drains.
  • Stains or soft spots on the fascia. Water getting behind the gutter rots the wood it is screwed into.
  • Water dumping at the foundation. A downspout knocked off its extension sends roof water straight into the red clay against your house.

How this works and sources

We downloaded NOAA’s Storm Events detail files for 2016 through 2025, kept the Georgia records for each county and counted the Thunderstorm Wind, Hail and Tornado reports ourselves. A report is one NOAA record, and a tornado that crosses a county line gets one in each county. Days are separate calendar dates. Ties for biggest hail show the most recent. The most recent storm report also checks NOAA’s 2026 file, which runs through June 2026.

Places follow the NOAA record, or the nearest town in the same county when NOAA names a crossroads. Quoted report text is NOAA’s, with abbreviations and capital letters cleaned up. Dollar figures are NOAA damage estimates. A March 12, 2026 tornado record filed under Forsyth County describes the town of Forsyth in Monroe County, so we left it out. For Fulton and Cobb, city-limit counts use U.S. Census 2020 city boundaries.

The storms behind the numbers

Six storm days Northeast Atlanta roofs still remember

Most storm days here bring a few downed trees. A handful each decade bring hail across half the territory or wind that flattens a county’s worth of limbs. These are the ones from the last ten years that show up in the record.

We pulled every thunderstorm wind, hail and tornado record NOAA keeps for the counties our towns sit in, and then sorted them by day. Two patterns jump out. Hail in Northeast Atlanta comes in bursts: 104 hail reports in ten years, but they fell on only 33 days, so when hail comes it tends to hit many neighborhoods at once. Wind is the steady one, with 654 reports spread over 195 days.

The other pattern is timing. June and July alone carry 370 of the 773 reports, and April through August carries 627 of them. September through November, the stretch most people think of as gutter season, logged only 16. That is why we push for a spring cleaning before thunderstorm season, not only a fall one after the leaves come down.

Tropical systems sit on top of all this. NOAA logged tropical storm records in every one of these counties during Irma in September 2017 and Zeta in October 2020, and in Gwinnett, Forsyth, Hall, Dawson and Oconee during Helene in September 2024. In Gwinnett alone, the Irma record lists hundreds of trees and power lines down and nine structures destroyed, mostly by falling trees.

Hail and your gutters

What hail actually does to a gutter system

Hail rarely tears a gutter off the house. It does the quiet kind of damage that shows up three storms later as a drip at the corner or water spilling over the front.

The National Weather Service calls hail severe at 1 inch, about the size of a quarter, and 101 of the 104 hail reports in our counties met that mark. Hail that size falls hard enough to dent aluminum. The front lip of the gutter takes the most hits, because it faces the sky and sticks out past the roof. Downspouts take the next most, especially the elbows near the top where the metal is already bent.

Dents on their own are mostly cosmetic. What matters is whether a dent changed how water moves. A crushed downspout narrows the path, so the next downpour backs up into the trough. A dent that kinks the bottom of a run can create a low spot that holds water and debris. Hail also strips grit off shingles and knocks leaves and twigs loose, and all of it washes into the gutter and settles at the outlets.

What we check after a hail storm

What you seeWhat it can meanWhat we usually do
Dents along the front of the gutterCosmetic if the run still drains, a problem if the lip bent inward or the bottom sagsCheck flow with water, then repair or replace the section
Dented or crushed downspoutsWater backs up into the gutter and overflows in heavy rainReplace the damaged piece and flush the whole downspout
Drips at corners and end capsSeams cracked or pulled open from the impactsReseal or rebuild the joint
Bent or lifted guardsDebris can now get under the guard and into the troughReset or replace the guard section and clear what got in
Grit and leaves at the outletsOutlets slowly plug and the gutter starts to overflowClean the trough and flush every outlet and elbow

Seamless runs help here. Gutters formed on site in one piece only have seams at the corners and ends, so there are fewer joints for hail to work open. If your guards took a beating, our crews check BroGuard stainless micro-mesh and any other guard the same way, section by section.

Wind, trees and your roofline

In Northeast Atlanta, wind damage usually means a tree

Read the NOAA reports for our counties and the same words come up again and again: trees down, limbs down, a tree on a house. That is what wind does to gutters here.

Thunderstorm wind is by far the most common report in every county in our lookup. Most of those reports exist because someone saw trees or power lines come down, and the National Weather Service estimated the gusts from the damage. Under the tall pines, oaks and tulip poplars of Gwinnett, Cherokee and North Fulton, a gust that would only rattle a window in an open field brings branches down onto rooflines.

A falling limb is the most direct threat to a gutter. It can flatten a run, rip hangers out of the fascia or bend a downspout off the wall. Smaller damage hides better. A gutter that took a glancing hit may still look straight from the driveway while two hangers have pulled loose and the run has lost its slope, so it holds water instead of draining.

Tropical storms add hours of steady wind on top of soaked ground. NOAA’s Zeta record for Gwinnett in October 2020 lists hundreds of trees down and at least 70 homes damaged by falling trees, with a 45 mph gust measured at the Lawrenceville airport.

58 mphthe gust speed the National Weather Service calls severe
176wind reports in Cherokee County, the most in our lookup
70+Gwinnett homes damaged by falling trees during Zeta
9Gwinnett structures destroyed during Irma, mostly by trees

After a wind storm, look for these

  • A run that sags between hangers or tips away from the fascia board
  • Hangers or spikes backed out of the wood
  • Downspouts pulled off the wall or knocked off their extensions
  • Limbs, needles and leaves piled in the trough and valleys
  • Water running behind the gutter instead of into it in the next rain
  • Fascia that is cracked, split or soft where a limb hit

If the storm pulled the gutter away from rotten wood, we can replace the fascia board before the gutter goes back up. If it just needs to be rehung and pitched, that is a gutter repair, and you get the price in writing before any work starts.

After the storm

A safe walk-around, then a free gutter check

You can learn a lot from the ground in ten minutes. Leave the ladder in the garage until the roof is dry and the power lines are clear.

  1. Stay clear of lines and limbsTreat every downed wire as live, and keep away from limbs hanging on the roof or caught in the gutters.
  2. Walk the house from the groundLook along each run for sags, gaps and dents, and at each downspout for kinks or pieces that came apart.
  3. Take dated photosPhotograph each side of the house and anything that looks off, so you have a clear record for later.
  4. Watch the next rainWater spilling over the front, dripping at corners or pouring behind the gutter tells you where the damage is.
  5. Check where the water landsMake sure every downspout still empties onto an extension or into a drain line, not against the foundation.
  6. Book the free checkA crew member walks the roofline, flushes the downspouts and gives you a written estimate only if something needs fixing.

Red clay is part of why the last step matters. A downspout knocked loose by a storm dumps the whole roof’s water right at the foundation, and clay holds it there, which is how a basement or crawlspace starts taking on moisture. If your downspouts feed buried lines, ask us to check those too with our underground drainage service, since storm debris can plug a pipe you cannot see.

Storm Check Questions, Answered

Where do the storm numbers on this page come from?

Every number comes from the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information Storm Events Database. We downloaded the detail files for 2016 through 2025 and counted the thunderstorm wind, hail and tornado records for each county ourselves, so the figures match NOAA’s own records report for report.

Why are North Fulton and East Cobb shown as whole counties?

NOAA files storm reports by county, not by neighborhood, so the Fulton and Cobb totals cover the whole county. To give you a fairer picture, the lookup also counts how many reports landed inside Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Roswell, or inside Marietta and Acworth, based on the coordinates in each record.

What size hail damages gutters?

Hail of 1 inch and up, the size the National Weather Service calls severe, can dent aluminum gutters and downspouts. Most hail reports in our counties hit that mark. Whether a dent matters depends on whether it changed how water drains, which is what a post-storm check looks at.

When is storm season in Northeast Atlanta?

April through August carried 627 of the 773 wind, hail and tornado reports in our counties from 2016 to 2025, and June and July alone carried 370. Spring hail days like April 10, 2025 and late summer tropical storms like Helene sit on either side of that peak.

Can dented gutters be repaired, or do they need replacing?

It depends on the damage. A crushed downspout piece, a cracked corner seam or a few loose hangers can usually be repaired. Long runs with a bent lip or low spots that hold water are often better replaced with a new seamless section. A Solutionist will tell you which, in writing, before any work starts.

What happens during a free post-storm gutter check?

A crew member walks the roofline, looks over every run, seam, hanger and guard, and flushes the downspouts to make sure water still drains. You hear what we found, and if anything needs work you get a free written estimate. If nothing does, we tell you that too.
