Why gutter guards matter in Northeast Atlanta
What an open gutter costs a Northeast Atlanta home
Before we get into BroGuard, here is the plain case for covering your gutters at all, from what our crews pull out of troughs from Suwanee to Watkinsville.
Water over the front edge
A gutter packed with needles and leaves cannot drain, so a summer thunderstorm sends water over the lip and down the fascia board. A few seasons of that and the wood behind the gutter rots and the hangers lose their bite.
Water in the red clay
Overflow lands in a line along the foundation. Georgia red clay does not forgive that: it erodes, stains brick and siding, and holds water against the house instead of letting it drain away, especially on the sloped lots common here.
Pines, oaks and sweetgums
Pines drop needles all year, oaks shed catkins and that yellow pollen every spring, and from October to the end of the year the oaks, maples, sweetgums and tulip poplars let go all at once. Sweetgum balls roll right into the downspout elbows.
Cleanings that never stop
With no quiet season, an open gutter here needs a spring clean-out after the pollen and catkins and another once the fall leaves are down, and homes under pines often need more than that.
Fewer trips up the ladder
Every open gutter means somebody on a ladder, often at the second story. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates about 273,000 injuries involving ladders and stools were treated in U.S. emergency departments in 2024. A guard turns most of those climbs into a quick look once the leaves finish dropping.

Standing water and pests
Wet needles and leaves hold water through a humid summer. That is a breeding spot for mosquitoes and a nesting spot for squirrels, birds and insects, right at your roofline.
Gutter guard types, compared honestly
Every type of guard keeps something out. The difference is what it lets through, and what you are still cleaning afterward. Quality varies inside every category, too: a mesh guard is only as good as the weave, the frame under it and how it is fastened to the gutter.
| Guard type | What it stops | What gets through | Upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coarse screens | Big leaves, like oak, maple and tulip poplar leaves | Pine needles, catkins and sweetgum seed slip through the openings and settle in the trough | Debris lodges in and under the screen, so it still has to come off for a real cleaning |
| Foam inserts | Leaves that land on top, at first | Grit and seed work into the foam, water can sit in it, and seedlings can sprout in it | Pulled out and cleaned or replaced once it packs up |
| Brush inserts | Some larger leaves and twigs | Needles and small leaves tangle in the bristles, and fine debris drops to the bottom of the gutter | Brushes come out and get shaken clean, more often under heavy tree cover |
| Reverse curve or surface tension covers | Leaves that slide off the rounded nose | Fine debris follows the water into the slot, and in a hard downpour some water can shoot past the edge | The slot and the trough under it can still clog, and the cover has to come off to clean them |
| Micro-mesh | Leaves, pine needles, catkins and sweetgum seed and most grit | Water. Very fine grit or pollen can sit on the surface until rain or a brush clears it | An occasional look at the surface and the downspouts; most interior cleanings stop |
Why our Northeast Atlanta crews install BroGuard
We install one guard: BroGuard. It is stainless steel micro-mesh that lets the rain straight through and keeps pine needles, oak leaves, sweetgum balls and spring pollen on top, and most of that pollen washes off the mesh with the next rain. It is fastened along the gutter with a low profile you barely see from the street. Keep scrolling to watch it work, or read our gutter guard guide if you are still deciding.

Frequently Asked Questions
BroGuard is the stainless micro-mesh gutter guard installed by The Brothers That Just Do Gutters NE Atlanta. The mesh keeps pine needles, oak leaves, sweetgum balls and roof grit on top while rain runs through into the gutter, so the trough stays open between cleanings.
Yes. Pine needles slip through the wide openings of screens and plastic covers, and sweetgum balls wedge into anything with a gap. The fine stainless mesh holds both on the surface, where wind and rain clear most of it, instead of letting them settle into the trough and the downspout outlets.
Pine pollen coats everything here in March and April, and in an open gutter it mixes with oak tassels into a paste that seals the outlets. On BroGuard most of it washes off the mesh with the next rain, and the rest rinses off during a routine check.
Any time of year works, but early fall is the favorite. We clear out the summer debris, install the guard, and your gutters are protected before the oaks, maples and sweetgums start dropping.
Usually, if the gutters are in good shape. A Solutionist checks the slope, seams and hangers first. If the runs are undersized or leaking at the joints, we will tell you honestly whether a new seamless run makes more sense before a guard goes on.
Far less. The mesh eliminates most interior cleanings, but no guard is completely maintenance-free. A quick look after the leaves finish dropping makes sure the surface is clear and the downspouts are flowing.
