Gutter style is mostly about the profile you see from the street. K-style is the workhorse on most houses here, and half-round brings a softer, traditional line that suits older and historic homes. Both come in 5 and 6 inch, and both can follow a curved wall as a radius gutter.
Style also covers the parts that keep a gutter on the house: hangers, corners and downspouts. Those details decide how long a system lasts, so we explain them below, along with the specialty materials each style comes in.
Gutter parts and profiles in Northeast Atlanta
The hardware behind the profile: hangers, corners and the small parts that hold a gutter up
K-style or half-round is the choice you see from the street. The parts that hold the gutter to the house decide how long it lasts. Here is what each one does.
When an old gutter sags along a 1970s ranch in Stone Mountain or pulls away from the fascia on a historic home in Athens, the profile is almost never the problem. It is the hardware: spikes backing out of swollen wood, a corner sealed once and forgotten, a downspout with no elbow at the bottom pouring water into the clay.
You can often read an old system from the ground. A row of nail heads across the face of the gutter means nail and ferrule, and if your gutters are more than ten years old there is a fair chance that is what holds them up. A clean face with no visible fasteners means hidden hangers. Half-round gutters rest in brackets fastened to the fascia.
Gutter hangers compared
| Hanger | How it holds | How it rates |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Screw hidden hanger | Pre-started screw driven at an angle through the back of the gutter into the fascia, with a shaft and an arched base for strength | The strongest of the hidden hangers |
| Heavy duty hidden hanger | Corrugated on the inside for added strength | Better than a standard hidden hanger, not as strong as Quick Screw |
| Standard hidden hanger | Grabs the front lip and screws into the fascia | Lower cost, and it shortens the life of the gutter |
| Nail and ferrule | A spike through the front, a ferrule and the back of the gutter into the fascia | The old standard. Works loose as the wood swells and shrinks |
| Half-round #10 combo | Bracket on the fascia with a spring clip over the front lip | The standard for half-round gutters |
The small parts that keep water where it belongs
- Gutter wedges fill the gap where the fascia is slanted or a molding sits behind the gutter.
- Bay miters join runs at 45 degree angles around bay windows and bonus rooms.
- Roof straps hold the gutter where there is no fascia, hooking the hanger and fastening into the roof.
- End caps are crimped and sealed so the end of the run stays dry.
- Conductor heads at the top of a downspout add style and hold the surge where a lot of roof drains to one spot.
- Elbows bring the downspout back to the wall, and another at the bottom turns water away from the foundation.
Picking a profile for your house
On the brick ranches and subdivision homes that make up most of Gwinnett and Forsyth, K-style carries the most water for the money, and the real upgrade is usually the hardware. On older homes around Marietta, Athens and Watkinsville, half-round often suits the architecture, especially in copper. Both profiles come in every metal on our specialty materials guide, and both can be formed as a radius gutter for a curved wall. Size is a separate call, covered in our gutter size guide.
Rehang or replace?
If your gutters are sound but sagging on old spikes, re-hanging them on hidden hangers through gutter repair may be all they need. If the runs are sectional, leaking at the joints or bent, a full gutter installation with new seamless runs is usually the better spend. Your Solutionist will show you which parts are failing and price both paths in writing.

Why the Brothers
Why Northeast Atlanta Homeowners Call the Brothers
We match the gutter to the architecture, not just the roof. A historic home in Athens and a new build in Hoschton should not get the same answer.
Hidden hangers, triple-sealed corners and properly sized downspouts are standard. That is where most gutters fail, so that is where we spend the effort.
Our Watkinsville and Marietta offices sit close to many of the older homes we work on, and Suwanee and Ball Ground cover the rest of the territory.
We publish every review, good or bad. You can read what your neighbors said before you ever pick up the phone.

K-style has a flat back and a front shaped like the letter K. It is the most common profile on homes and commercial buildings because it carries a lot of water and the shape adds strength. Half-round is a rounded trough chosen mostly for looks, so it is treated as a specialty style. Both come in 5 and 6 inch.
On most brick ranches and two-story subdivision homes across Gwinnett and Forsyth, K-style gives a clean line and the most capacity for the money. On older and historic homes around Marietta, Athens and Watkinsville, half-round often looks right, especially in copper. Seamless half-round is not available for every job, so ask your Solutionist, who can show you both profiles against your actual roofline.
Yes. K-style and half-round can both be formed as a radius gutter, which bends to follow a part of the house shaped like a semicircle. That keeps water managed on the curve instead of leaving a gap in the system. Ask about it during your free estimate.
The Quick Screw hidden hanger is the best hanger on the market. The screw comes already started, a shaft around it adds strength and a slight arch along the bottom stiffens it. It is driven at an angle through the back of the gutter into the fascia. Old nail and ferrule systems work loose as the wood swells and shrinks, which is why so many older gutters sag.
Corners are where many gutters leak, so we seal each one in three places: on the manufacturer’s seam in the middle, on the inside where the runs overlap into it, and on top where they meet. Corners are also where pine needles and sweetgum balls pile up and hold water, so those seals matter here. For bay windows and other angled walls, a bay miter joins the runs cleanly.
Not for drainage. Round and rectangular downspouts handle water and debris about the same, so the choice is about looks. Corrugated round downspouts are strong and look great with copper, while smooth round downspouts come only in copper and dent more easily if something hits them. Rectangular downspouts come in 2×3 inch, standard with 5 inch gutters, and 3×4 inch, usually paired with 6 inch.
