Quick answer

Galvanized Steel Gutters in Northeast Atlanta, GA: The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Northeast Atlanta installs galvanized steel gutters: steel with a protective zinc coating that resists water, weather and physical damage. They can be painted to match the house or left in a mill finish, and they hold their shape under the limbs and leaf loads that come with North Georgia’s big trees. Call (770) 637-5130 or book online.

Galvanized gutters start as steel and get a thin coat of zinc. That coating lets them stand up to water, weather and physical damage better than bare steel. You can paint them to match your trim, which adds another layer of protection, or leave the mill finish showing. Steel also does not warp with temperature swings, which helps on a roof that bakes in July and sees a hard freeze in January.

Strength is the main reason to choose it. Galvanized steel is one of the most durable gutter materials you can buy, and it is less likely to crack when a pine limb drops on it, when a summer storm gusts through, or when the trough fills with wet oak leaves and mud. If you are weighing it against the other coated steel, read our galvalume gutters page.

Steel gutters for wooded lots, barns and farm homes

Galvanized steel is the gutter we suggest when toughness matters more than anything else. Here is where it fits in our territory, how to finish it, and how to keep it strong.

Galvanized steel suits the properties that are hardest on a gutter: homes under tall pines and hardwoods like many lots around Canton, Woodstock, Ball Ground and Jasper, plus barns, farm homes and contemporary builds where a metal edge fits the design. On those buildings a gutter takes falling limbs, packed wet leaves and the occasional ladder, and steel shrugs off what bends lighter metal.

It helps to know what galvanized is not. It is not the longest-lived coated steel, since galvalume’s aluminum and zinc blend outlasts it. It is not the lightest gutter either. What it offers is stiffness, a reasonable price next to copper, and a finish you can paint or leave raw.

Choosing a finish

A quick way to decide: if the building already shows metal somewhere, like a barn roof, a porch roof or metal window trim, the mill finish usually looks intentional. On a painted farmhouse or a brick home, paint the steel to match the trim so the strength is there without the gutter drawing the eye. Your Solutionist can hold both options up against your house before you choose.

What a wooded-lot gutter has to carry

  • Pine limbs and cones knocked loose by thunderstorm gusts.
  • Wet oak and tulip poplar leaves packing in from October on.
  • Sweetgum balls piling up in the corners.
  • Spring catkins and pollen that turn to paste in the rain.
  • The weight of ice on the rare winter storm day.
  • Ladders leaned against it every time someone cleans it.

Each of those puts weight or impact on the trough. Lighter gutters dent, crack or lose their slope toward the downspout. Steel holds its shape, which is why it keeps draining after a rough season.

Keeping a steel system strong

  1. Hang it on solid wood.Steel is only as strong as what it is fastened to, so soft boards are replaced through fascia board repair before the hangers go in.
  2. Keep the weight out.Wet leaves and needles are the heaviest thing most gutters ever hold. Gutter guards keep that load off the trough.
  3. Check it after big storms.A dropped limb can bend even steel. Our gutter repair crew straightens or replaces the damaged section and resets the slope.

Galvanized Gutter Questions, Answered

What are galvanized gutters made of?

Steel with a thin protective coat of zinc. The zinc shields the steel from water and weather and gives the gutter more resistance to dents and cracks than bare metal. We install galvanized gutters in the K-style profile.

Is bonderized steel the same thing?

Close. Bonderized steel is galvanized steel with a phosphate-treated surface that helps paint grip. Both are zinc-coated steel with the same strength underneath. If you plan to paint your gutters to match the trim, ask your Solutionist which finish fits the project.

Will steel gutters hold up on a wooded lot?

That is where steel earns its keep. Homes in Canton, Woodstock and Ball Ground often sit under tall pines and hardwoods, and a dropped limb or a trough packed with wet leaves can bend or crack lighter gutters. Galvanized steel is less likely to crack under that kind of load or a strong thunderstorm gust.

How does galvanized steel handle an ice storm?

Ice storms are not common here, but when one comes through North Georgia, the weight of ice in a gutter is real. Steel is stiffer than aluminum and does not warp in the swing from a hard freeze to a mild afternoon, so it keeps its slope toward the downspout once the ice melts. Sound hangers and fascia matter just as much, and we check both.

Should I choose galvanized or stainless steel?

Galvanized is the easier one to live with. It weighs less and is easier to cut and install, and it is easier to clean, since chlorine-based bleach can destroy the protective oxide layer on stainless but does not harm galvanized. For most homes that makes galvanized the more practical steel.

What kind of homes suit galvanized gutters?

The mill finish looks right on contemporary homes, barns and farmhouse-style builds, and painted galvanized works on traditional homes where the gutter has to match the trim. It also costs far less than copper, so ask for both on your free estimate if you want to compare.
