Quick answer
5 Inch Gutters in Northeast Atlanta, GA: 5 inch K-style seamless gutters from The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Northeast Atlanta fit most single-family roofs. We form them on site and pair them with 2×3 or 3×4 inch downspouts, depending on how much roof drains to each one. Call (770) 637-5130 or book online.
A 5 inch gutter is what most houses have, and for good reason: on a typical roof it carries the water without overbuilding the system or the budget. Single-story brick ranches in Tucker, Norcross and Stone Mountain are classic 5 inch homes. Where part of a roof needs more capacity we will say so, and our gutter sizes guide explains how we decide.

Getting a 5 inch system right on every run of the house
5 inch handles most roofs here when the downspouts, pitch and discharge are done well. This is the run-by-run look we take on the houses that suit it.
A 5 inch gutter rarely fails because it is too small for the whole house. It fails at one spot: the run over the front steps with its only downspout at the far end, the back run where a porch roof ties in, the corner where a valley lands. Get those spots right and 5 inch does the job on most single-story brick ranches and simpler two-story homes from Tucker and Lilburn out to Grayson and Loganville.
That is why our Solutionists walk every run instead of quoting one size from the curb. When a spot needs more, the fix is often a larger downspout or a second outlet rather than a bigger gutter around the entire house.
Run by run on a typical ranch
| Run | What we watch for | Usual 5 inch answer |
|---|---|---|
| Front run over the entry | Water spilling onto the steps when the only downspout sits at the far corner | A second outlet near the entry, or a 3×4 downspout |
| Back run over a patio or sunroom | A long, straight wall collecting a lot of roof | Two downspouts, each turned away from the slab and foundation |
| Garage run | Usually short and simple | One 2×3 downspout, aimed so it does not wash clay across the driveway |
| Porch or carport under a higher wall | Upper roof water landing on a lower gutter | The one place 5 inch is the wrong size: that run steps up to 6 inch |
| Inside corner under a valley | Fast water jumping the corner in a storm | An outlet placed close to the corner, with the corner sealed carefully |
Signs your 5 inch system needs adjusting, not replacing
- One corner overflows while the rest of the run stays dry.
- A downspout backs up and spills from the outlet in a hard rain.
- Water still standing in the trough a day after a storm, a sign the pitch has flattened.
- The gutter pulling away where old spikes run through its face.
- Orange clay splashed up the brick at the bottom of a downspout.
- Drips at the joints of an older sectional system.
Most of these are gutter repair fixes: re-hanging at the right slope, adding an outlet, resealing a corner. If the gutter itself is worn out, we form new seamless gutters on site in the same 5 inch size.
Where the water goes after the downspout
On a sloped lot, which describes a lot of Northeast Atlanta, a 5 inch system can be sized perfectly and still cause trouble if each downspout drops its water beside the house. Red clay erodes, stains and holds water against foundation and crawlspace walls. We turn every downspout out with an elbow at the bottom, and where the yard slopes back toward the house we talk through underground drainage as part of the same plan.
When 5 inch is not enough
If a section has an upper roof feeding it, a big steep plane, or a valley that overwhelms even a well-placed outlet, we put 6 inch gutters on that section alone. The rest of the house stays 5 inch, in a matching color, so the change is hard to spot from the street. Our gutter size guide explains how we make that call.

Run through a few checks. Runs under 40 feet need at least one downspout and runs over 40 feet need two or more, the gutter should not overflow in an ordinary rain, and the roof should be shingle with a proper drip edge. If any of those do not fit, 6 inch is worth a look.
When a lower gutter has to catch runoff from an upper roof that already has gutters. That lower run takes water from both roofs and will overflow in a heavy storm. Large, steep or metal roof sections are also better served by 6 inch.
Usually, yes. The single-story brick ranches built from the 1960s to the 1980s around Tucker, Lilburn and Stone Mountain tend to have moderate roof areas and simple lines, which is right where 5 inch performs well. What we check closely on older homes is where the downspouts empty, because water released beside the foundation is a problem no gutter size can fix.
For a lot of roofs, yes, as long as the downspouts keep up. A summer storm can drop an inch or more in under an hour, so we size for that rather than an average rain. If one section of your roof sends too much water, we can put 6 inch on that section only, or step up to 3×4 inch downspouts.
The standard is a 2×3 inch downspout. We can also pair a 5 inch gutter with a larger 3×4 inch downspout when more roof area drains to it, which adds capacity without changing the gutter itself.
We form 5 inch seamless gutters in K-style, the most common profile on homes here, in a wide range of factory-finished aluminum colors, and copper is available too. Half-round is an option as well, so ask your Solutionist. Matching the gutter to red brick, painted trim or siding is part of every estimate.
