Quick answer
Snow Guards in Northeast Atlanta, GA: Snow guards are devices fixed to the roof that hold snow and ice in place so it melts off gradually instead of sliding off in one sheet. The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Northeast Atlanta installs them on steep, metal, slate and wood roofs where a winter storm could send ice onto people or property. Call (770) 637-5130 or book online.
Snow guards are not the same as gutter guards. A gutter guard keeps leaves out of the gutter, and a snow guard keeps snow and ice on the roof. On most asphalt shingle roofs in Northeast Atlanta you will never need one, because shingles grip well enough to hold the little snow we get.
The exceptions are steep roofs and slick surfaces: metal, slate and wood shake. After an ice storm in North Georgia, a frozen sheet can let go all at once and land on a front walk, a deck or a car in the driveway. Snow guards hold it in place until the sun melts it off, and they pair well with heated gutters on homes where ice is a known problem.
Snow guards for North Georgia roofs
Which Northeast Atlanta roofs need snow guards, and which material to use
Shingle roofs almost never do. Steep metal, slate and shake roofs over a walkway or driveway sometimes do. When they do, matching the guard to the roof matters as much as the guard itself.
Asphalt shingles have enough texture to hold the modest snow North Georgia gets, so on most homes from Duluth to Watkinsville snow guards are not on our list at all. The exceptions are roofs that are very steep or very slick: metal, slate and wood shake.
On those roofs, wet snow and freezing rain can bond into one lump that freezes solid overnight. As the roof warms, from the attic below or the sun above, a thin layer of meltwater forms underneath and the whole block lets go at once. On its way down it can rip off a gutter and land on whatever sits below the eave: a front step, a deck, a car.
Snow guards break that sheet up and hold it on the roof until it melts off gradually. They come in several sizes and colors so they sit quietly on the roof.
Matching the guard to the roof
| Roof | Guard we use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Metal roof (aluminum, copper, galvanized or galvalume) | Lexan, or a guard in the same metal as the roof | Two different metals plus rainwater form a corrosive bridge. Lexan attaches with a weather-rated bonding agent and avoids that entirely. |
| Cedar shake | Aluminum | Low corrosion and a secure hold on wood |
| Stone tile or slate | Aluminum | Holds on a hard, slick surface without corroding |
| Asphalt shingle | Usually none | Shingles grip well enough for the snow we see |
Is your roof a candidate?
- The roof is metal, slate or wood shake rather than asphalt shingle.
- The pitch is steep enough that nobody would walk on it.
- An entry, walkway, deck or parking spot sits under the eave.
- Ice has slid off in a past storm, or bent or pulled down a gutter.
- A gutter guard or heated gutter below would take the hit from falling ice.
If two or more of these fit, it is worth a look. If none do, you can cross snow guards off your list, and a Solutionist will tell you so.
Snow guards, gutters and heat: how they fit together
Snow guards hold ice up top, but the meltwater still has to get off the roof. That is where heated gutters come in on homes with a history of ice, keeping the gutter warm so that slow melt drains instead of refreezing at the eave. We do not run heat cable across many roof surfaces because of roof warranty concerns, so the cable stays inside the gutter and downspout. On a galvalume metal roof, galvalume gutters are the natural match below the guards. If falling ice has already done damage, gutter repair straightens or rehangs the run first.
Once installed, snow guards need the same attention as the rest of the roof edge. We check the fasteners, the waterproofing at each attachment and the assembly itself so they stay put when they are finally asked to work. The rest of our winter and drainage work is under exterior solutions.

They hold snow and ice on the roof so it melts off slowly from the sun or another heat source, instead of cascading onto landscaping, cars or people. Wet snow can clump together, freeze overnight into a solid block and then slide as the roof surface thaws beneath it. Snow guards keep that block where it is.
Most do not. Snow and ice storms are occasional here, and a typical asphalt shingle roof grips well enough on its own. Snow guards earn their place on steep metal, slate or wood shake roofs, especially in the northern, higher parts of the territory around Jasper and Dawsonville, and above entries, walkways and driveways where falling ice could hurt someone.
Very steep roofs and roofs made of slate, wood or metal. Those surfaces are slick enough that even with good attic insulation, a thaw under the snow can let a frozen sheet slide off. Asphalt shingles usually provide enough grip to prevent that.
It depends on the roof. Clear Lexan guards are the least visible option and the most favorable for keeping the roof intact and free of corrosion, attached to metal roofs with a bonding agent made for the weather. Aluminum guards suit cedar shake and stone tile roofs. On other metal roofs we match the guard to the roof metal.
Metal roofs come in aluminum, copper, galvanized and galvalume steel. When two different metals touch and rainwater bridges them, they corrode where they meet, even with an insulator between them. Using the same alloy for the roof and the snow guard heads off that problem down the road.
Yes, and on homes with real ice trouble they are often paired. Snow guards keep the load on the roof while it melts, and a heated gutter makes sure that meltwater drains instead of refreezing at the edge. For a metal-roofed home up toward Jasper or a lake house near Gainesville, that combination covers both problems.
