Quick answer

Heated Gutters in Northeast Atlanta, GA: A heated gutter is a gutter and downspout system with self-regulating heat cable run inside it, under a gutter guard, so ice cannot build up during a winter storm. The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Northeast Atlanta installs them for homes that have had ice damage or sit where ice lingers after a freeze. Call (770) 637-5130 or book online.

Let’s be straight about the weather: most winters in Northeast Atlanta pass without ice in the gutters. But North Georgia does get the occasional ice storm and hard freeze, and when one rolls through, ice can fill a gutter, back water up under the shingles and pull runs off the fascia. The homes that feel it most sit on higher ground toward Dawsonville, Jasper and Ball Ground, have rooflines on a shaded north side, or have already had an ice dam.

For those homes, a heated gutter is targeted protection. We run self-regulating heat cable inside the gutters and downspouts and cover it with a gutter guard, so the whole system stays warm enough to carry water instead of ice.

Heated gutters in North Georgia

Do you need heated gutters in Northeast Atlanta? An honest look

Most homes here never will. For the few rooflines that ice up when a North Georgia ice storm comes through, heat cable inside the gutter is the version that works. Here is how to tell which group you are in.

Ice storms and hard freezes are real in North Georgia, but they are infrequent. Plenty of winters in Suwanee or Lawrenceville pass without ice in the gutters at all. So we do not suggest heat cable for every house, and if a Solutionist does recommend it for yours, you should hear exactly why.

The homes where it earns its keep tend to share a few traits: an ice dam in the past, a low-pitch roof section, a shaded roofline that stays cold after the sun comes out, or a gutter over a front walk or driveway where icicles are a hazard. Ice also likes to form near bathroom vents and chimneys, where warmth escaping the house melts snow that refreezes at the cold eave.

Before any cable, we look at the cheaper causes. If the real problem is attic ventilation or a clogged downspout, we will tell you, because no heat cable fixes an attic.

What causes ice dams

  • Sunlight warming the shingles during the day.
  • Sharp temperature swings from day to night.
  • Poor soffit ventilation.
  • No ridge vent at the peak of the roof.
  • A poorly insulated attic.
  • No gutter protection, so snow and debris sit in the trough.
  • A low roof pitch, where ice builds faster.

How the system is powered and run

  1. Plug in or wire in.Most systems connect to an existing outdoor outlet through a premade cable length or a GFCI plug-in cord set, with no hardwiring. If there is no outlet nearby, we will suggest an electrician for the final connection.
  2. Switch it on before the storm.Cable that is already warm when freezing rain or the first flakes land melts them on contact. Starting after ice has built up still works, but it takes longer and uses more power.
  3. Let it regulate itself. The Nuheat Weather-Ready cable we install raises its output as temperatures drop and backs off as things warm up, so actual use depends on the length of the run and the weather. It has a UV-resistant polyolefin jacket over a tinned copper braid.

Part of a winter-ready roof edge

Heat cable works best on a sound, clean system. The guard over it, such as BroGuard, protects the cable in winter and keeps leaves and needles out the rest of the year. On steep metal roofs, snow guards hold sheets of ice in place above the warm gutter. If ice has already bent a run or softened the board behind it, gutter repair and fascia board repair come first. Everything else that ties into the gutter is under exterior solutions.

Heated Gutter Questions, Answered

Do I really need heated gutters in Georgia?

Most homes here do not, and we will tell you so. Heated gutters make sense where ice actually causes trouble: homes in the northern, higher parts of the territory, long north-facing rooflines that stay shaded and frozen after a storm, low-pitch roofs, and any house that has already had water come in from an ice dam. If that does not describe your home, the money is better spent on clean gutters and good guards.

How does a heated gutter work?

A self-regulating heat cable runs along the inside of the gutter and down through the downspouts, under a gutter guard. When the system is on, it keeps the gutter and guard warm, so snow and ice melting off the roof hit warm metal and drain away as water instead of refreezing at the edge.

Why not just put heat cable on the roof?

Cable zigzagged across the first few feet of the roof can melt snow there, but it does not stop ice from forming in the gutter, and ice can still build above the cable, moving the problem higher up the roof. Over time, roof-mounted cable has been shown to cause more roof damage than no cable at all, and it may violate your roof warranty. We keep the cable inside the gutters and downspouts, off the shingles.

What causes ice dams?

Snow or ice melts on the warmer part of the roof, runs down and refreezes at the colder edge and in the gutter. Common causes are sun warming the shingles, big swings between day and night temperatures, poor soffit ventilation, no ridge vent, a poorly insulated attic and no gutter protection. Low-pitch roofs dam faster, and trouble often starts near bathroom vents and chimneys.

Why does a heated gutter need a gutter guard?

The guard protects the cable from damage and keeps leaves and debris from catching on it, it strengthens the gutter, and it traps heat inside so the whole system stays warm. It also keeps snow out of the trough, so it melts faster.

How is it powered, and what does it cost to run?

In many cases the cable plugs into an existing outdoor outlet with a GFCI cord set, so no hardwiring is needed. If there is no outlet nearby, we may suggest an electrician for the final hookup. The cable we install adjusts its own output, giving off more heat as the temperature drops and less as it warms, and actual usage depends on the length of the run.

When should I turn the system on?

Just before the storm. When ice or snow shows up in the North Georgia forecast, switch it on ahead of time so flakes and freezing rain melt as they land. Ice that has already built up will still melt, but it takes longer and uses more power. The rest of the year, the system stays off.
